Almagul creates a poetic mixture of video and performance in a unique setting that combines themes of Islamic cultural tradition and contemporary art, nature, creating a language of so-called “romantic punk shamanism” to present her view of the world around her and cultural history. Menlibayeva’s practice is rooted in her education in the Soviet Russian avant-garde school of futurism, which she combines with the nomadic aesthetics of post-Soviet, contemporary Kazakhstan.
