Aly and Abdulzaher started Bonocle in 2015 after Aly had a car accident where he had to join a special needs center and interact with the blind community for the first time. Bonocle’s portable uni-cell braille device allows blind individuals to interpret the contents of any electronic device through the medium of braille. This allows them to play games with their sighted friends and family, both in-person and online, and study and read books. After connecting to a smartphone, Bonocle converts content on the screen to braille in real time. Bonocle had raised $1.1 million in funding from angel investors, NGOs, and government organizations as of October 2023.
