His Excellency Eng. Ahmed Mohammed Al Rumaithi has served as the Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) since November 2021, where he leads the emirate’s strategic agenda for a secure, sustainable, and diversified energy future. Under his leadership, the DoE advances Abu Dhabi’s transition to clean energy, reinforces long-term energy and water security, and drives policies that support the UAE’s national priorities, including the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. With a distinguished career spanning more than 15 years, H.E. Eng. Al Rumaithi has played a pivotal role in shaping the UAE’s clean energy landscape. Since 2008, he has contributed to the delivery of some of the world’s most significant energy projects, including the Middle East’s first peaceful nuclear energy program and one of the largest single-site operational solar photovoltaic plants globally. A founding executive of Abu Dhabi’s nuclear program, His Excellency held several senior leadership roles from the program’s inception, culminating in his appointment as Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) from 2015 to 2021. In this role, he held full accountability for the development and delivery of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, a landmark project comprising four 1,400-MW units that, once fully operational, will supply 5.6 GW of clean electricity—meeting up to 25% of the UAE’s electricity demand. His Excellency is also an established leader in the solar energy sector. Since 2018, he has served as Chairman of Noor Abu Dhabi, the emirate’s flagship 1.2-GW single-site solar photovoltaic plant—one of the largest of its kind in the world. Before joining the DoE, H.E. Eng. Al Rumaithi oversaw major strategic energy and infrastructure initiatives at the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and previously led several environmental and energy efficiency programs at Abu Dhabi Gas Industries Ltd. (GASCO), further strengthening his broad expertise in the energy and industrial sectors. His Excellency holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering from Liverpool John Moores University in the United Kingdom and a master’s degree in Quality Management from OPEN Biography the University of Wollongong in Dubai. He has also completed advanced executive leadership programs at globally renowned institutions, including Harvard Business School, London Business School, the Wharton School, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
